Smallville Season One Thanks to Lex's matchmaking, Clark and Lana plan a night on the town. Their evening is interrupted by a cold killer. A kryptonite-altered teen seduces women so he can use their body heat to survive. Chloe's his next target.

Who is Sean? Sean is a Smallville High football player. One evening he falls through the ice, trapped below in the frigid kryptonite-tainted water. He emerges hypothermic and stronger the next morning, absorbing heat to survive. He quickly realizes that body heat can keep him warm. He meets Jenna at her house. She warms up the shower in invitation. Sean shows up blue in the face. He kisses her, turning her into a popsicle.
What's up with Chloe? Chloe has a crush on Sean. She plays a little hard to get, and Sean quickly pursues other girls. Later Sean calls and they plan to meet at the coffee shop. Frozen Sean shows up at school, trapping Chloe by freezing the pool.

What's up with Lex? In financial trouble, Mom wants Dad to attend an investment meeting at Lex's with her. At the Luther mansion, Lex offers financial help in the form of a partnership to the Kents in gratitude to Clark saving his life. The Kents takes out a bank loan, Jonathan still mistrusting Lex.

What's up with Lana? Lex tells Lana he thinks she's with the wrong guy. Whitney blows off their plans in Metropolis to watch the fight on pay-per-view with friends. Lex knows this, and suggests Clark ask Lana to the Radiohead concert, with Lex providing the tickets and limo. Clark asks Lana to go "just as friends." She accepts.

What's up with Clark? In the limo on the way to the concert, things are going pretty well, until Lana and Clark see the TV news report that the police are seeking Sean in the death of Jenna. Clark rushes to the coffee shop, knowing Chloe is in danger. At school, Clark arrives just in time to free Chloe from the frozen pool. Sean gets away. In all the excitement, Clark left Lana at the coffee shop. Whitney shows up at the coffee shop and takes Lana home. As they drive in Whitney's truck, Lana tells Whitney she was with Clark.

How it ends: Sean gets a jolt of energy and heat from electrical cables, causing a blackout in town. As Lana and Whitney drive home, they see Sean in the middle of the road and swerve into a ditch to avoid running him down. In the accident, Lana twists her ankle and Sean disappears. Whitney helps Lana to the safety of the nearby Luthor mansion. Clark finds Whitney's truck. Sean grabs him, absorbing his body heat, leaving Clark frozen in the road. Next Sean absorbs heat and energy from the mansion's generator. Mrs. Kent goes out the check the generator as Sean approaches. Clark arrives just in time to send Mom inside to safety. Sean and Clark fight. Clark flings Sean into the Luthor's pond and he freezes below the ice.

Clark and Lana: Clark apologizes for the evening. He asks for another date, but Lana already has a date with Whitney, saying she and Clark are just friends. Lana ironically tells Clark she goes out with Whitney because "whenever I need him, he's there, he makes me feel safe."
OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION (The WB):

RECAP (The WB):

RECAP (TV Tome):
On the shore of a frozen-over, Kryptonite-infested lake outside Smallville, a high school party is in full swing. Sean Kelvin, a womanizing football player, hits on Chloe and convinces her to give him his phone number. After, Clark tells Chloe to avoid Sean: "He's a dog." Meanwhile, Sean has ventured out onto the icy surface of the lake after an errant football. Suddenly, the ice cracks and Sean plunges into the freezing water below. He struggles, but eventually sinks into the glowing green depths. The next morning, a fist punches through the ice. Sean, skin blue with cold, stumbles through the remnants of the previous night's party toward a weakly burning bonfire. He reaches out his shivering hand and literally sucks the heat out of the fire.

On the Kent farm, Clark demonstrates his superhuman mathematics abilities helping his parents work on the farm's finances. Sadly, the farm is in trouble. At school, Sean visits the nurse's office. He's can't get warm. As the nurse takes Sean's temperature (it's an inhuman 32 degrees), Sean touches her hand, absorbing some of her warmth. Sean is instantly rejuvenated. Meanwhile, Lex pays a visit to Martha and invites her and Jonathan to his home for a business discussion regarding the difficulties facing local farmers. That afternoon at the Beanery, Lex observes Whitney back out on a trip to Metropolis with Lana. Lex then offers Clark two tickets to a Radiohead concert and the use of his limo if Clark will ask Lana out. Clark gathers his courage and does so. Lana agrees, "just as friends." Back at school, Sean, feeling cold again, approaches Chloe. When she plays hard to get, Sean instantly moves on to his ex-girlfriend Jenna and Chloe's feelings are hurt. That night, Jenna is in the shower, waiting for Sean. Suddenly, Sean pulls aside the curtain. He is completely blue with cold. Jenna panics and tries get away, but Sean has her cornered. "I just want to get warm," he says. Sean moves in for a kiss and sucks Jenna's heat. As he pulls back we see that Jenna is frozen solid. Sean releases her and she crashes to the floor, shattering into a thousand pieces.

At the Kent Farm, Martha tells Jonathan about Lex's invitation. Jonathan doesn't want to go - he still can't trust the Luthors - but Martha tells him she already told Lex they'd be there. Clark arrives and happily tells them about his not-a-date with Lana. Meanwhile, Sean's heat fix has worn off. He's calling former girlfriends, all of whom want nothing to do with him, when he notices Chloe's phone number still written on his hand. At the same time, Chloe is helping Clark pick out an outfit for his non-date, when her cell phone rings. It's Sean; he wants to meet her for coffee at the Torch office. Chloe agrees. Later, Clark and Lana are in the limo on their way to the concert and share a moment. Lana then turns on the TV and they see a news report about Jenna's death. Remembering Chloe was going to meet Sean that night, Clark has the limo stop at the Beanery. He asks Lana to wait for him and then rushes off. Meanwhile, Chloe is working at the Torch when she discovers a trail of rose petals leading to the swimming pool. When she's inside, Sean, skin icy blue again, locks the door behind her. Seeing Sean' appearance, Chloe is terrified, but in her hurry to escape she falls into the pool. As she swims to the other side, Sean plunges his hand into the water, drawing the heat out of it and turning it into ice. The ice reaches Chloe just as she is climbing out, trapping her foot in the pool. As she struggles to break free, Clark smashes open the door, rescues Chloe, and hurls Sean to the side.

Back at the Torch, Clark and Chloe discuss what happened when Clark suddenly remembers he left Lana at the Beanery. At the Beanery, Whitney arrives, surprised to see Lana. Disappointed that Clark never came back, Lana asks Whitney to take her home. Clark arrives, just missing her. Meanwhile, Sean is at a power sub-station drawing much-needed heat from the exposed power lines. At Luthor Mansion, Lex unveils his plan to Jonathan and Martha. He offers his services as an investor as an alternative to a high-interest bank loan. Attractive as it is, Jonathan is wary of Lex's offer. At the same time, Whitney is driving Lana home, asking her what she was doing out with Clark, when Sean suddenly appears on the road in front of them. Whitney swerves out of the way and his truck crashes into a ravine. Lana's ankle is injured. They head toward some lights in the distance. As Lex is wrapping up his pitch at Luthor Mansion, Whitney and Lana arrive. Meanwhile, Clark arrives at the scene of the accident and is grabbed by Sean. Sean is surprised by the level of heat he draws from Clark. Fully invigorated, Sean heads toward Luthor Mansion, leaving Clark frozen on the road.

At Luthor Mansion, the power goes out when Sean sucks heat from the generator. Jonathan and Martha go out to investigate. Meanwhile, Clark wakes up and heads for the mansion. As Martha works on the generator, Sean approaches her. He's about to grab her when Clark arrives and punches Sean, sending him flying. When Clark goes to look for him, Sean is gone. Suddenly, Sean grabs Clark from behind and begins sucking Clark's heat. Clark grabs Sean and hurls him into a nearby pond. Sean, unable to control his power, sucks the heat from the water around him, encasing himself in ice. The next day, Lex arrives at the Kent's barn to talk to Jonathan. It seems that Jonathan took out a bank loan. "At least with them, I know where I stand," says Jonathan. At school, Lana and Clark talk about their failed not-a-date. Clark asks her out again, but she's going to be out with Whitney. Clark asks her why she's with Whitney. "Because whenever I need him, he's there."

A jock named Sean inadvertently falls through the ice into a lake with kryptonite at the bottom, and turns into a living heat-absorbing battery. He quickly discovers that his best "fix" comes from absorbing the body heat from people. He tries to hit on Chloe, but she passes. Sean starts moving through his black book of other girls, freezing them solid. Meanwhile, Lex has given Clark tickets for a concert to go with Lana, and even supplies the limo. However, Clark hears about Sean's path of destruction and leaves, just in time to rescue Chloe. He then confronts Sean but gets frozen himself. Fortunately, the process proves less than fatal for the super-powered Clark. As Sean goes for Lana and Clark's parents who are at Lex's manor, Clark intercepts him and throws him into the nearby lake, freezing him solid in the water. At the end Lana resolves to just be friends with Clark.
QUOTES:

REVIEW (TV Tome):
Sean: (to Clark) That's your mom? She's HOT!

Martha: The distributer gets 12.5
Jonathan: Feed bill over 6 months at 5%
Martha: Plus the mortgage at 8.2 plus the harvester repairs gives us...
Clark: (instantly) $54,501.38.

Sean: If you want I could rub them for you; nothing heats up the body like friction.
Chloe: Wow. I can't believe you just delivered that line with a straight face.

Chloe: I'm swearing off men.
Clark: We're not all bad.
Pete: Maybe you should just swear off heat sucking horn dogs.

Pete: I can't believe both your dates went straight to hell and I ended up with the limo.

Chloe: This is what I love about high school parties: people will gather anywhere as long as there's illegally purchased alcohol and even the slightest chance of hooking up.

Pete: Clark Kent, international man of mystery.

Chloe: Your online horoscope suggests that you try not to flaunt your excitement which I know will be hard since you've been waiting for this date since, like your first growth spurt.
Clark: I'll say this one more time, and then I'll print up bumper stickers: this is not a date.

Clark: Hello, citizens.
Martha: I'm not familiar with this child. Where's the moody one? Lives upstairs, runs real fast?

Jonathan: We already talked about that.
Martha: I talked, you grunted.
Jonathan: I thought that I was rather articulate.

Lex: A high school boyfriend isn't a husband; he's an obstacle.

At this rate, "Smallville" is going to run out of ideas for bad guys very soon. We’ve had electro-man, insect-man, a firebreather, a shapeshifter, and now an ice-man. There can’t be many types of powers left.

Is this really how it’s going to be EVERY WEEK? Some guy comes into contact with kryptonite, turns evil and threatens Lana or Chloe’s life? Yawn. Double yawn. Please, puh-leeeeze, let’s have a bad guy (or, shockers, bad girl!) who isn’t quite so bad. Maybe they use their krypto-enhanced powers for something morally gray.

Anyway, I’ll try not to rant so much this week. Really, I promise.

So, Clark finally scores a date with Lana. Of course, officially it’s a "non-date." (I went on many a non-date in high school. A non-date is basically when one person really believes they’re just friends and the other person is desperately hoping more something more.) Lex hooks him up with Radiohead tickets and a limo, and all seems to be going well. But alas, Clark has to leave the non-date to save Chloe from the icy clutches of Sean.

It’s no wonder Clark has a tough time getting to close to anyone. He’s always running off to save somebody’s day. I felt really bad for Clark when Lana tells him later that she’s with Whitney because he makes her feel safe. Ouch. Clark does all these brave, heroic deeds, yet can’t claim the credit for them to impress Lana. Plus, now she thinks he’s kind of a flake. Clark’s learning more and more that being a superhero isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.

In other news, somebody likes Chloe! Well, sort of. Actually Sean doesn’t really like her, he just needs her for body warmth. And later he goes after Lana anyway. I know that the show is setting up this "Chloe is jealous of Lana" thing but really it’s unbelievable and a bit nauseating to see every male on the show panting after Lana and totally ignoring the beautiful, smart, sassy Chloe. FREAK OF THE WEEK:
One of Smallville High's jocks, Sean Kelvin falls through the ice of a frozen lake that has Kryptonite rocks at the bottom. Although his body is completely frozen, he mysteriously survives. He finds a fire still burning from the party and sucks the heat out of it. While visiting the nurse at school and finding his temperature is an unnatural 32 degrees, he touches the hand of the nurse, and absorbs her warmth and immediately feels better. He realizes that he needs to soak up other peoples' heat in order to survive. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor has offered Clark Kent two tickets to the Radiohead concert and the use of his limo if Clark agrees to ask Lana Lang out on a date.

Lex also finds out that the Kent farm is experiencing financial difficulties. He invites Martha and Jonathan Kent to his mansion to discuss a loan that would be more beneficial to them than a bank loan. As always, Jonathan is weary of the Luthors, but Martha encourages him to listen.

He goes on a rampage and attempts to get close to all the girls he has dated and flirted with. When Chloe Sullivan resists, he moves on to the next girl, Jenna. As he kisses her, he realizes he has the power to suck out all the heat in her body. She dies frozen, falls to the floor and shatters in a million pieces. Sean is running out of dates, and tries calling Chloe again, this time she agrees to meet him for coffee. When Clark hears the news of Jenna's death, he gets worried for Chloe, runs out on his date with Lana, and arrives just in time to save her from being frozen.

Desperate for his "fix", Sean finds the required heat in exposed power lines. As Whitney Fordman drives Lana back from her failed date, angry that she would be out with Clark, Sean appears in the middle of the road, and Whitney swerves his truck off the road. Lana is injured and Whitney helps her walk to the closest house, the Luthor manor where the Kents are having dinner with Lex. Sean goes to follow them, but Clark attempts to stop him. Sean absorbs a huge amount of heat out of Clark and leaves him frozen by the roadside.

Reaching the Luthor mansion, he sucks the heat out of the generator, causing the power to go out. Martha is working on the generator, and Sean is about to grab her, when a revitalized Clark appears. Clark and Sean fight, and Sean falls into a pond, sucking the heat out of the pond and locking himself into a block of ice.
